Skin Solutions - Scars

Condition: Scars

A scar results from the healing of a wound caused by an accident, surgery or disease. The more severe the damage to the skin or the deeper the injury, the longer the repair may take and the more noticeable the scar may be. The good news is, some scar tissue can be inhibited from forming and/or reversed if proper care of the wound is taken during the healing phase.

There are three main types of scars: atrophic, hypertrophic and keloids.

Atrophic scars are indentations in the skin and result from acne or surgery. Hypertrophic scars and keloids do not appear as indentations in the skin but rather are raised above the skin. Hypertrophic scars result from wounds that take longer to heal. They are usually thick scars and can be swollen.

Keloids are similar to hypertrophic scars as they are elevated like hypertrophic scars and both are more common in races of color, specifically African Americans and Hispanic- Americans. However, keloids differ from hypertrophic scars in that the skin cells and the connective tissue cells (fibroblasts) multiply aggressively and excessively to repair the damage to the skin causing the scar to swell and widen beyond the original area of the wound, whereas atrophic scars are isolated to the wound area.

Age and the location of the wound on the body affect the way a scar forms. Wound repair is accelerated in younger individuals than older consequently scars are usually thicker and larger in more youthful skin. A scar located on the back of a hand (where the skin is tighter) will be more visible than a scar located on a fleshier part of the body. If a scar is raised (hypertrophic or keloid), it will appear more uneven.

Skin resurfacing, using dermabrasion, chemical peels, or laser are traditional approaches to diminishing scars that can be invasive and require a period of recovery. Depending on the cause, size and age of a scar, a wellness approach may help reverse or diminish scar tissue.

The Wellness Solution

Our wellness approach is a non-invasive, non-irritating approach that can help diminish the appearance of a scar. The first step uses freshly-activated, nature identical 15% L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) followed by a wellness moisturizer formulated with 5% pure, natural vitamin E (mixed tocopherols) and other botanical wellness ingredients to:

  • Help reverse the appearance of scar tissue
  • Create a trans-epidermal seal to help skin retain natural hydration to soften skin
  • Scavenge free radicals that can break down healthy skin cells and alter the look of a scar
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Help stimulate the natural production of collagen synthesis for new healthy cell development

Topical application at least twice daily of our wellness formulas using 15% L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) and 5% mixed tocopherols (pure natural vitamin E) during all phases of wound healing (depending on the size and nature of the wound), can help modify scar tissue formation (see Wounds).
