Condition: Diaper Rash
Diaper rash is a condition that is usually associated with red, inflamed skin with a prickly rash on an infant during the time a diaper is worn. A diaper rash is usually a combination of factors, including exposure to urine, feces, moisture, friction, and perfume or other chemicals used in disposable wipes. Often parents are told the problem is that they do not change the diaper often enough. As that can lead to compounded problems, diaper rash can occur with a regular changing cycle as well.
One factor that doctors and other professionals have neglected is the water that the infant is bathed in. We underestimate the effect chlorine (used in our water systems to kill bacteria) has on a sensitive infant's (and everyone's, for that matter) skin. Additionally, in water that contains high levels of calcium (over 100ppm can be a problem for some; however, hardness levels can exceed 200ppm or even reach 600ppm in some parts of the country) the problems to the skin can be significant.
